Sony’s 3D
family grows with introduction of 3D-enabled Cyber-shot cameras
Sony’s 3D family grows with introduction of 3D-enabled Cyber-shot
cameras
08 July 2010 : World’s first compact digital still cameras with 3D Sweep Panorama capability
expands offering
Sony Australia announced it will add 3D capability to its Cyber-shot digital still camera range with the
introduction of the Cyber-shot DSC-TX9 and DSC-WX5 cameras. In line with Sony’s promise to deliver an extensive
suite of 3D entertainment products and services, the TX9 and WX5 are the world’s first compact digital still
cameras able to capture panoramic photos in 3D1.
"Today Sony amplifies its 3D story, taking it from the lounge room into the hands of everyday camera users,"
said Katsuya Watanabe, Marketing Manager for Digital Imaging at Sony Australia. "Innovation plays a big role in
Sony's product development and we continue to push the boundaries in digital photography with the introduction
of our 3D models. The new Cyber-shot cameras signal the future for electronics products, with 3D capability as
a core feature."
Primed for capturing quality photos, the latest Cyber-shot TX9 and WX5 cameras are equipped with a 25mm and
24mm wide-angle lens respectively, 12.2 megapixel Exmor R CMOS image sensor and Full HD (1920 x 1080, 50i)
AVCHD recording capability that produce stunning, high-resolution photos and videos.
Cyber-shot TX9 and WX5
Adding a third dimension to digital
imaging possibilities, the Cyber-shot TX9 and WX5 offer photo enthusiasts the unique opportunity to
capture panoramic photos in 3D with Sony's exclusive 3D Sweep Panorama function. When activated, simply
sweep the camera in a horizontal direction to capture impressive, ultra-wide panoramic shots in 3D2 that
can then be viewed on any compatible 3D TV when connected via HDMI.
Sweep Multi View
Sweep Multi View is a completely new feature, which allows photographers to capture 3D-like images and view
them on their camera without the need for a dedicated 3D display.
The Cyber-shot TX9 and WX5 are also optimised with Background Defocus mode, allowing budding photographers to
capture portrait and macro photos with the attractive blurred background effect that previously could only be
achieved with DSLR cameras. For capturing fast moving scenes such as sports, both cameras are also equipped
with high-speed continuous shooting of 10 frames per second (fps) as well as Full HD AVCHD (1920 x 1080, 50i)
video recording.
For ease of use, the TX9 and WX5 both integrate a new Superior Auto Shooting mode. When activated, the camera
automatically chooses the optimal settings to match the shooting scene and conditions. Additionally, the new
cameras minimise the need for photo editing with the new Soft Skin mode, which helps to enhance the subject’s
facial features by removing blemishes and defining the eyes and lips for beautiful portrait shots.
Photographers can choose from three Soft Skin modes (low, medium, high) and enhance the faces of up to eight
people simultaneously.
The Cyber-shot TX9 features a high performance
Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar lens, Exmor R CMOS sensor with approximately twice the sensitivity compared to
conventional CMOS sensors, wide-angle 25 mm lens and 4x optical zoom. Offering equally impressive features
is the flagship Cyber-shot WX5 series, with a 24mm wide-angle (35mm equivalent) f/2.4 G lens, 5x Optical
Zoom, "Exmor R" CMOS sensor and high-speed, high quality BIONZ imaging processor for clear and crisp
images.
Enhancing compatibility, the new Cyber-shot cameras are compatible with Sony's Memory Stick Duo™ and SD / SDHC
/SDXC memory cards. In addition, the new in-camera application PMB Portable enables users to upload images
directly from the camera to photo sharing websites via USB without going through the hassle of downloading
images onto their computer first.
Pricing and availability of the new Cyber-shot cameras are to be confirmed.
1. Accurate as of 8 July 2010, the Cyber-shot TX9 and WX5 are the world’s first compact digital still cameras
equipped with a 3D shooting function in a single-lens system
2. 3D panorama shots can only be viewed when pictures are displayed on a compatible LCD TV for 3D viewing. 3D
panorama shots will appear 2D when displayed on camera.
